The Mostly Raw Food Diet + Weight Loss Tips

I was hesitant to write this post because it doesn't really fit into the content of my blog.  However, I do write vulnerable, personal stuff here sometimes, and what could be more personal and vulnerable than the topic of losing weight?  This is my post on the mostly raw food diet + weight loss tips!

I could have written a post exclaiming that I'm going on a diet, but I'd rather write something that might help someone else make healthful life changes.  Just to be clear, this isn't a flash diet.  This is a diet that I plan to make a permanent fixture in my life.

I've dabbled in mostly raw vegan and raw foods a few times, but it's one of those things where it's not going to stick until you're ready.  Well, I'm ready!

This is something I've been working up to for the past year or so.  The number one dieting tip I can give you, whether it be to lose weight or make a healthful change, is to not do anything until you know you are ready.

You can sample it, take it for a spin, etc. but when it comes to the act of making it part of your existence, it won't work until you're 100% ready for a change.  Let's face it, change is hard.  If it were easy, more people would be doing it.

During the preliminary phase, you're going to feel like crap.  You're going to be stuck in transition and that never feels good.  You may have tried to take action a few times and failed.  That's going to make you feel worse.

Then, clarity will come.  I can't really explain it or put a label on it.  It's this instant moment where everything is clear and you know that you can do the impossible.  That's where I'm at now.

The past few weeks have been challenging, because I was in the preliminary phase of making a change.  I knew a change was coming, but I knew forcing it would be fruitless, so I let it come to me naturally.  I have arrived.

The Mostly Raw Food Diet + Weight Loss Tips

Why did I choose a mostly raw vegan diet versus something else?  It's my bottom line.  It's something that I've been working toward making a permanent lifestyle change for some time now.

I've written extensively about it and even created my own diet plan based on it at one point.  After I use the diet myself, I plan on turning it into a product that you can buy from my website.  For now, I want to take it for a spin myself, so that I can prove that it works.

I could never bring myself to sell the diet that I created until I was able to lose the weight and stick with it.  This is my chance to prove it works.  This is my chance to do all the trial and error and experimentation that comes before ushering something into the public eye.

I was inspired recently by this post by Gabby Bernstein.  It made me realize that I didn't just want to lose weight, but I wanted to make a real change in my life.  I want to eat high vibration foods.  I was on that track for a while and then life happened.

There were several events that took place in a short amount of time that shook my foundation.  It created a huge imbalance in my life.  It definitely wrecked my self-esteem in the process, which is why I've ended up where I am today.

My Weight Gain Story

This is a little embarrassing to talk about, but there's no way around it.  At the end of 2014, Chloe and I had moved to Sedona, Arizona and moved back to Florida two and a half months later.  When I came back, I was hit with a whopping dose of reality and started to gain weight a little at a time.

It took years to gain the weight back.  It happened very slowly until January of 2017 when I lost all the income that was coming in and had to start relying on my family to get by.

My whole life became out of balance overnight and I felt I had to save money on other people's dime, so I started to eat fewer veggies and fruits, and more prepared vegan foods.  You can read my original weight loss story here.

Apparently, I have a pattern.  During times of duress, I binge eat.  I also eat things that I'm not naturally inclined to eat, like more packaged foods and in a survival situation, a return to vegetarianism.

Not that there's anything wrong with vegetarianism, but for me, it was taking a step backward from all of the things I believed in and worked to change.  It was like all of a sudden, I couldn't be me anymore.

Within a year and a half, I gained a lot of weight.  I went from being no more than 104 pounds at my highest to being around 120 pounds.  Before you pull out your pitchforks and torches, everyone's ideal weight is different.

My happy weight is 96 pounds.  It's when I look and feel my best and it ranges to a 104 at the higher end of the scale.  I am very petite and tiny.  I have an extra-small frame.  It's difficult to be able to discern that from pictures.

Up until now, I tried everything, especially these past eight months.  I even tried the vegetarian keto diet.  Guess what?  It didn't work for me.  Yes, I lost a few pounds, but it's not a diet that resonates with the person I am.  A plant-based diet does.

How Do I Know I've Gained Too Much Weight?

Because I've had an eating disorder in the past, I don't weigh myself very much.  I weigh in about once or twice a month.  While I'm dieting, I am going to weigh myself once a week.

Here are some other clear indicators of gaining too much weight:

  • You can see weight gain in your face
  • Your clothes don't fit anymore
  • The clothes that do fit become tighter and more uncomfortable
  • Muffin top
  • Upper arms appear bigger, especially in photographs
  • People look at you differently.  I hate to say it but it's true.
I'm quite sure there are more indicators of weight gain than this, but these are the critical ones.  I barely have any clothes that fit me anymore, because my arms are bigger for extra-small tops and my stomach and hips squeeze out of the top of my pants, thus muffin top.

These are all physical things your body does to let you know it's time to lose weight.  Weight loss just means that your life is out of balance.  So, it also might mean it's time to take stock of other areas of your life too.

My Weight Loss Plan of Action

Now that I'm ready to lose the weight, I can implement my plan of action.  This is based solely on what works for me and what has worked in the past.  I believe it can work for anyone.

My plan of action involves a permanent lifestyle change to my diet.  It's to go mostly raw vegan.  This means that even after I've lost the weight, I plan to stick with it.

How to stick with it:  I'm going to practice raw till four.  If you've never heard of it before, raw till four is where you eat only raw foods all day long and at dinnertime you allow yourself to have some cooked vegetables too.

While I'm Dieting:  I'm going to be drinking raw juices during the day.  Essentially, a juice fast, which you can start here.  If I really need to, I can eat a raw fruit or vegetable.  I'm not going to be as strict this time, as long as it's detox foods only.

For juice recipes, you might want to read Juice Recipes For Glowing Skin, Hair, and Nails.

How long do I plan to diet:  My rule of thumb is to keep going until all the weight is gone.  Always lose a couple of extra pounds.  Why?  Because it gives leeway if you gain a couple back.

How long do I think losing weight will take me:  About 21 days or so.  Luckily, I didn't gain all the weight back.  I think I can get the weight off of me within a few weeks using this method.  In fact, I know I can.

Potential pitfalls and challenges:  It's important to estimate any potential pitfalls and challenges to lose weight.  For me, my pregnant daughter is coming to stay with me for a week while her house is getting work done on it.  So, I guess it's safe to say that family is a potential pitfall to losing weight.

I think I can handle it though.  By the time she comes at the end of the week, I will have shrunk my stomach and gotten the most difficult part of juicing and detoxing out of the way.

The Bottom Line:  The bottom line for me is that I'm not going to eat foods that don't resonate with me anymore.  I'm tired of it.  Mostly raw works best for me.

Keep myself busy:  I have a lot of work to do anyway.  Right now, I'm working on a class for my blog.  I plan on making many more classes, as a major selling point in my indie biz.

Keeping busy keeps my mind off eating, which is a nice change of pace.  Have you ever been so busy you forgot to eat?  That's what my plan is.

Detox Fitness:  While I'm losing weight I always make sure that I'm sweating out toxins too.  I do this through detox workouts such as, using the treadmill, hiking the trails, and most of all, through yoga.

I find it's best not to do strength training while working out unless it's through yoga.  You've got to treat your body more gentle during this time.

Smooth Move:  I use smooth move peppermint tea when I'm fasting because the toxins tend to build up in the body, like a boiling pressure point, and have trouble being released right away.

In case you didn't know, toxins will be released through pee, poop, and sweat.  Smooth move peppermint tea helps get the toxins out, as long as I have no more than one or two tea bags a day.

Food Journal:  I'm also going to keep a food journal here on my blog.  I won't be eating much, if at all at first.  It will give you juice recipe ideas and meal plans to help you with your own weight loss plan.  This will also hold me accountable for my actions and give me the motivation to keep going!

Weight Loss Tips

Here are some weight loss tips that work for me.  I believe that if you are really serious about losing the weight, it will help you too!
  • Never start a diet on a Monday is bull.  You can start wherever you are!
  • Never use a flash diet.  Make a permanent dietary lifestyle change.  Some ideas to choose from are raw vegan, mostly raw, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.  Make it your bottom line!
  • You'll know when you're ready to lose the weight.  It's okay to wait until you feel ready or experiment to find what works best for you.
  • Love your body first.  This sounds crazy, doesn't it?  How can you love your body when it's not in a good place?  You have to love where you are to get to where you want to be.  The other day I started saying thank you God for my perfect figure and skinny body.  I felt it on every level of my being and now I'm ready to lose the weight.  See how that works?
  • Fast for weight loss.  It works better than anything, especially if you're a binge eater like I am.  You can use intermittent fasting intervals, a straight juice flush, detox foods which are raw fruits and veggies.  In my experience, this is a way you can lose weight fast, still get the proper nutrition, and create a lasting dietary change.
  • Keep a food diary.  That's what I plan to do.  It will help you track food, as well as track your moods and fluctuations.  It's a valuable weight loss tool.
  • Practice daily fitness.  Exercise daily for weight loss and to be mindful of your eating habits.
  • Do yoga.  Again, it goes back to that mindful thing.  Intuitive eating and whatnot.
Today is day one of my weight loss journey.  Because of the fact that I've created a bottom line for myself, giving up bread and pasta, for example, I will never have to take this journey again.  Check back weekly to read my food journal and weight loss diary!
